Underneath the noise, the deadlines and the always-on phone, there's a natural state — calm, rooted, awake — that you didn't have to learn and can't lose. It's where deep sleep comes easily, where joy sits close to the surface, where challenges land without ever knocking you over. Most of us haven't lost it; we've just lost the way there. The breath is the road back. My story below is how I know.
For most of my life I was shut down, and I didn't know it. Boarding school teaches a boy to hold everything in, and my body learned the lesson the hard way: from thirteen to twenty-eight, I cried once, when my grandmother died. I thought that was strength, that having no feelings was what it was to be a man. Really I was just disconnected - I didn't feel the lows of life, sure, but I couldn't feel the highs in life either.
A wake-up experience in my early twenties put me back in touch with my body for the first time — and with everything trapped inside it. Years of meditation, yoga and the ancient practices followed, then breathwork, and from thereon the door properly opened. Behind it: grief, anger and fear I'd carried since childhood, completely unaware. And then, on the other side of the pain — i began to feel deep joy again, and laughter do deep in fact that my belly would hurt.
Years of holding on had left my body tight and locked, the fascia gripped tight around it. Qigong worked into that web from the inside, and what breathwork loosened, qigong released. From there everything grew deeper — a real calm whatever the week brings, and far more energy for the people I love and the people I serve.
Then in 2023 came a cancer diagnosis. Friends and family were stunned — you? — and in 2025, thank God, surgeons removed the tumour from my lung. Breathwork didn't cure it; surgery did. But it's what carried me through the pain, the fear and the recovery. When I say the breath can bring you home, it's because I've had to find my own way back — time and time again.
And the road led somewhere I never expected: to Islam, and the Sufi path — the purification of the heart, and a life of worshipping God. For me, breathwork is a divine service — helping people come back to themselves, to the nature already within them, something the tradition calls fitra.
Whether it's a calmer mind, deeper sleep or more energy — tell me what you're working towards, and I'll be honest about whether I can help.
